Sign of Unity. The Great Coat of Arms of Ukraine: from Narbut to Yakutovych

Curator: Yurii Savchuk

On November 25, the National Art Museum of Ukraine will launch an exhibition project “The Sign of Unity. The Great Emblem of Ukraine: from Narbut to Yakutovych”, which for the first time in the practice of NAMU will be deployed in offline and online formats. The project "Sign of Unity" is dedicated to the centuries-old tradition of the great coat of arms of Ukraine, the historical origins of which date back to the Liberation War of 1917-1921.

The exposition is formed of about 60 artifacts, a third of which will be presented for public view for the first time. These exhibits are unknown not only to the public but also to a narrow circle of scientists. For the first time, visitors will be able to see the seal of the Ukrainian State, designed by Vasyl Krychevskyi, and the seal of the State Secretariat authored by Heorhii Narbut. The exhibition will feature a sketch of the seal of the State Secretariat from the collection of the National Art Museum and an original matrix, the existence of which has not been known for over a century. Other unique sphragistic artifacts from the collection of the Sheremetiev Museum also deserve special attention. For the first time, the seals of Ukrainian hetmans will be presented to the public. For instance, the founder of the Cossack State - Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi and Hetman Ivan Skoropadskyi.

An important place in the exhibition will be occupied by rarities of the Ukrainian Museum and Library in Stamford (USA), which is an international partner of the project. For the first time, the audience will be able to get acquainted with the full album "State Decorations of Ukraine" by the prominent Ukrainian armorist Mykola Bytynskyi.

Ukraine is represented by six museums in Kyiv, Lviv and Chernihiv, three central state archives, a national library and the directorate of art exhibitions. In total, twelve institutions from Ukraine and the United States will take part in the exhibition project.
