Every year since 2004 the National Art Museum of Ukraine has organized an educational exhibition project within the program “Living Art”. The goal of such a project is to approach understanding of the art alphabet with a help of texts, schemes and multimedia, appropriate for different levels of perception. In addition, this exhibition is especially interesting in the light of the approaching Euro 2012.
This year the project is centered on the Viktor Ryzhykh’s painting “Kyiv Football” (1998), a prominent art work, which can be perceived and interpreted in many ways.
Firstly, it is a portrayal of the concrete event from the history of Ukrainian football. On the picture are represented the stars of Kyiv Dynamo Oleh Blokhin, Viktor Kolotov, Volodymyr Yeremeiev and the moment of the match for the European Super Cup on October, 6, 1975 at the Republican Stadium in Kyiv. In addition to the picture the documental materials of the time will be represented
Secondly, the painting gives us an opportunity to think on such topic as “Sport in the eyes of an artist”. Sport thematics in art embodies high ideals of Olympic movement, such as described in the well known slogan “Healthy spirit lives in healthy body”. Beauty of the body, enlightened by spirit, has been praised in art since the time of Ancient Greece. The prominent Ukrainian painter Viktor Ryzhykh paid tribute to sport thematics in the art of the 20th century. In his youth he was a devoted football player in amateur team and passionate football fan. In 1970-80’s Viktor Ryzhykh was a head of the Sport Section of the Art Union of Ukraine, and exhibitions of this Section had a success beyond the borders of Ukraine as well as within.
Finally, the most important moment is the painting itself as a unique artwork. Through the composition and color it reveals the idea of motion praises the sport deed, creates a legend about the battle of Titans.
It is interesting to analyze how TV reportages, newspaper articles, and photos use different means of expression for the same subject thus influencing their audience in different ways. Of course, only live match can create the highest emotional tension, but it doesn’t last long. Video reproduces events in consecutive order and gives a possibility to repeat the culminating point of the game. Picture shows only one moment of the match in a classical unity of place and action, creating aesthetically strong and convincing impression, which can last all the time while the spectator is looking at the picture.
Photos of the well known Ukrainian photographer Mykhailo Chernichkin demonstrate an immaculate aesthetic feeling and almost supernatural intuition of the master of sport reportage.
Do you want to understand the secret laws of art and feel the taste of creative work? Welcome to the exhibition, where you can become a participant of the eventful program of workshops and meetings.
There will be also something you can take with you – the “Activity Book: an Intellectual and Aesthetic Game for Children and Adults”, which has been written after the materials of the exhibition and consists of various games and intellectual tasks.
