Viktor Sydorenko “Millstones of Time”

Painting, video, installation, photography
Curator:

Project represented Ukraine in 2003 at the 50th Biennale in Venice (Italy), the eldest and the most prestige world forum of contemporary art.

Commissary of the Ukrainian National Presentation — Oleksandr Fedoruk, Curators — Viktor Sydorenko, Oleksandr Soloviov, Viktoria Burlaka.

“After the idea appeared and the name of a project was defined, I'd suddenly remembered a story, which is a part of my family background. My grandfather was a miller. An accident had happened to him after he'd returned from war. The grandfather got under the millstones of the mill and they ground him in a literal sense — he died in a couple of days.

The main idea of the project is the idea of eternal, monotonously lasting time, which grinds, mashes, destroys people, draws them into an exhausting running around, goes and comes back… Monotonously of this circulation is not senseless — finally it brings you something… In “Zhertvoprinoshenie (Sacrificial Offering)” by Tarkovskiy there's a moment, when a boy is persevere in watering a dry tree — and it blossoms. For those, who look at us from above, we must look like fussing around ants. Routing, dull humdrumness — but this is life. Though the senseless of life becomes evident when we try to find an eminent sense in it. From realistic point of view our monotonous work is awarded with a batch of milled flour and ones have the bigger batch, when others have the smaller one.

Each grinds its own items, but we do the same things. We are lonely and apathetic one to another, we have to coexist together, but separately — friends, enemies, betrayers and betrayed. That is why we got an idea of referring to “The Last Supper”. This story is in the list of everlasting plots, because it helps you to show the senseless of our existence…

Back to list.
