15 thousand people visited the exhibition in the first two weeks. This success was conditioned not just by the general interest to Ukraine, but by the quality of this collection (80% exposed works are from the usual permanent museum exposition).
All works are the first-class models of Ukrainian figurative art of ХІХ – beginning of ХХ century. “Zhnyva (Harvest)” by Volodyr Orlovsky, “Selo Vzymku. Hlukhoman (Village in Winter. By-place)” by Petro Levchenko, “Pered Hrozoiu (Before the Storm)” by Mykola Pymonenko, “Vesna na Ukraiyni (Spring in Ukraine)” by Serhiy Vasylkivskiy, “Selianska Rodyna (Rural Family)” and “Pralia (Laundress)” by Oleksandr Murashko, “Narechena (Bride)” by Fedir Krychevskiy are generally acknowledged; “Portret Borysa Tomary (Portrait of Borys Tomara)” by Havrulo Vasko is the unique work for our art history (there are only 2 original copies created by this wonderful artists we, unfortunately, know little about). A special value for the Ukrainian culture has full of drama self-portrait by Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko, which he’d created in his last years.
These selected works are aimed to provide the observers with wide overview of both achievements of Ukrainian art, which has a European footstep, and culture, nature and everyday life of Ukraine at the period of its classic painting and classic literature development.

UKRAINIAN MODERNISM. 1910–1930
Host museums in the USA: Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago, The Ukrainian Museum, New York. Organizers of the Exhibition: Foundation for International Arts & Education (США). Curators: Mr. M. Lobanov-Rostovskiy (Great Britain), Mr.D.Horbachov, Ms.L.Kovalska (Ukraine), Mr. John Bolt (USA).
Having a great experience in organizing of similar projects the Fund contacted the Museum with the offer to show Ukrainian Art of the 1st third of XX century in America, or like “open” it to the American audience. During the last decade Ukrainian avant-garde was shown in Europe and Canada. This project unlike the previous ones presents the development of avant-garde in Ukraine from modern period to the crucial moment, when a socialistic realism was ideologically stated in the art.
«Ukrainian Modernism» is a large-scale exhibition including over 70 works (painting, graphics, sculpture) from the collection of National Art Museum of Ukraine, leading museums and private collections of Kyiv and Ukraine. These are over 30 names of artists, among which are Kazymir Malevich, David Burliuk, Oleksandra Ekster, Oleksa Hryshchenko, Oleksandr Arkhypenko and others, and artists that mainly worked in Ukraine – Oleksandr Bohomazov, Vasyl Ermilov, Viktor Palmov, but their names are becoming the world-known just now. Here you can find works of Venice Biennale favorite artists of 1928 and 1930 – Fedir Krychevskiy and Anatoliy Petrytskiy. Paintings by Vsevolod Makymovych, who committed suicide in the age of 20, but was able to implement book illustrative ideas of Beardsley into great panel, might become the sensation of this exhibition.
Art of Ukrainian artists had been viewed in the frame of Russian avant-garde for a long time. During the last ten years Ukrainian avant-garde has been presented as European one in the researches of foreign and local scientists. The exhibition shows many-sided cooperation of Ukrainian art with the general European artistic process, with Russian culture and allows the observer to define both European and local peculiarities in the Ukrainian art of 1910-1930th.
