OLENA YABLONS’KA
A Breath of Light
Painting

28.08. – 14.09.2008

Opening: August 28 (Thursday) at 5 p.m.
Curator: Liudmyla Kovals’ka

Olena Yablons’ka was born in 1918 in Smolensk. Her first teacher of art was her father. In 1934-1941 she studied at Kyiv Art Institute, where her teachers were Kostyantyn Yeleva, Oleksiy Shovkunenko, Pavel Kotov and A.Cherkaskyi. She started her artistic practice in Kyiv upon her return from evacuation during World War II. Before 1960’s, she mainly worked in book graphics, specializing in children books.

Starting from 1970’s, Yablons’ka worked in easel painting technique, and her favorite genres were landscape and still-life. The works she produced from 1970’s to 1980’s had a rather decorative basis. Later, the intensive color scale of her works became more and more delicate and light.

Yablons’ka was an active participant of different exhibitions. Before 1990 she constantly took part in All-Soviet and Republican exhibitions. In 1990’s, her personal exhibitions took place in several galleries of Kyiv and later in France, Great Britain, and Germany. In 1993 and 2004 exhibitions were held at the National Art Museum of Ukraine.  At the moment, the works of Yablons’ka are kept in many art museums of Ukraine and in private collections.

Yablons’ka thought that, however thoughtfully a painting might be conceived, a reference to reality is needed if the artist wants to be convincing. In her works, Yablons’ka aimed at showing the changeability of life and wanted to share the sensation of world energy with the viewer.
