Lyuba Rapoport. Unknown object

Painting, graphics
Curator: Olena Agamian

An exhibition presents works of Lyuba Rapoport, one of the most interesting artists of nowadays. Lyubov Rapoport was born in the family of well-known Ukrainian artists. Family atmosphere of creative work helped Lyuba to find her artistic way early. From father, landscape painter Borys Rapoport, Lyuba got subtle understanding of nature. From mother, Hanna Faynerman, she got emotionally-expressive attitude to color and love of Ukrainian folk art. But while Hanna Faynerman expresses her love of folk art in festive decorative canvases, Lyuba’s works characterize by folklore perception of the world, where everyday naturally crosses cosmic.
Among works, presented on the exhibition, is a portrait gallery of the 70-ies. Each portrait depicts a person of bright individuality, creative elite of the age. Accurate, someway grotesque drawing, attention to internal world of the person – all emphasize uniqueness of each individual.
People, who appeared on artist’s canvases on the edge of millennium, are not portraits of certain persons. “I don’t know, where they come from. It seems, that first I draw them, and then I meet them somewhere at a bus stop or in shopping mall” – says Lyuba, commenting appearance of these new characters. Heroes of her paintings are so immersed in creative process of contemplation, that are seemed to dissolve their personality in eternal beauty of nature.
Both an artist and her characters are attracted not only cozy Kyiv corners, but megapolis life in times of devastation and endless reconstruction. Dramatically expressive, these landscapes impress a viewer with their emotional theatricality. However, behind this theatricality is whole variety of everyday life. Life of the city and its residents, dramatic, someway paradoxical paintings’ coloring, energetic, sometimes shocking surface with use of different factures and glazes.
On the exhibition are presented in the first time Lyuba’s self-portraits: ironical and expressive, touching, and even sentimental.
“Self-portrait” – thus can be called also artist’s album, published and presented in June 2009 in NAMU. For many fans of Lyuba Rapoport this edition become a discovery not only because of high-quality reproductions, that give an opportunity to follow an artistic way of the painter, but also because of Lyuba’s unexpected memoir notes.
On the exhibition are presented about 100 painting and graphic works.
