The Society of Independents
Curator:
National Art Museum Of Ukraine Embassy of Ukraine in the State of Israel Jewish Confederation of Ukraine Ukrainian Avant-Garde Fund
present exhibition project of Ukrainian avant-garde artists of the beginning of the 20th century The Society of Independents 31.10 - 01.12.2013
The project The Society of Independents is a return of the unique art collection that was exported from Ukraine by Jacob Peremen in 1919. But thanks to the passion of art critics and collectors the collection received a chance for the new life - in the spring of 2010 the part of it was displayed on Sotheby's auction and sold to Kyiv fund Ukrainian Avant-Garde. The first presentation took place in New York in 2012. Now it is available for watching in the halls of the National Art Museum of Ukraine. The Society of Independents, the union of young artists from Odessa, created a revolution in art world of the beginning of the 20th century. Teofil Fraierman, Amshei Nurenberg, Isaak Malik, Mikhailo Hershenfeldt, Israel Meksin, Sygizmung Olesevych, and Sandro Fazini - followers of Cézanne am Matisse, cubists and fauvists - one of the first comprehended the forms and borders of avant-garde trends and formed a worthy opposition to the traditional painting of the Society of South-Russian Artists. Mariia Zadorozhna, the General Director of the National Art Museum of Ukraine, comments, "Without The Society of Independents the cultural life of Ukraine in the beginning of the 20th century cannot be imagined. The paintings, full with life, freedom, and sensibility, were bought by the collector Jacob Peremen and transported to Palestine where they were kept safe from destruction. Thus Peremen not only saved the works of his contemporary artists, the first Ukrainian avant-garde representatives, but also created a collection that attested the European turn in the art life of Ukraine."
The project Society of Independents is supported by the Embassy of Ukraine in the State of Israel and dedicated to the 65th Anniversary of the Independence of the State of Israel. Press-conference is scheduled on October 30 at 12 pm. Registration is mandatory.
