Our Way to Independence
Curator: Ilmars Znotins
Embassy of the Republic of Latvia in Ukraine And National Art Museum of Ukraine present the exhibition of photos OUR PATH TO INDEPENDENCE 30 April - 18 May 2014 Curator Ilmars Znotins Opening: April, 30th (Wednesday), 6 p.m.
Revival of the Republic of Latvia in the late twentieth century is the most significant event in recent history of the country. The Baltic Way on May 4th, 1990 is the day which every citizen of the Republic of Latvia should perceive as a holiday not only intellectually but also in his or her heart: prolonged agony of the Soviet regime, and final recognition of Latvia by the major world states, joining NATO and the EU at the beginning of the new century. "Information about these events, the images of those days should always be in front of our eyes, and we should tell the others about it with pride and dignity - because no one but us can and will do so." Photo exhibition is based on historical documentary evidence. It keeps a chronological sequence of events in January 1991, reflecting the nodal points in Latvian history and then focusing on the mood of the people and their experience. In addition, photos of parallel events in Lithuania and Estonia are presented. Within the project the following events will take place: May 1, 2 p.m. - discussion with the curator of the exhibition Ilmars Znotins on the topic "People of Latgalia"; May 8, 4 p.m. - discussion with Anna Zigure, writer, translator, and diplomat, on the topic "Individual movement that provokes change"; May 16, 6 p.m. - discussion with Riga City Council deputy Sarmite Elerte on the topic "Baltic Way - an icon of history and a source of political inspiration." Visitors of the exhibition also will be able to get acquainted with the program Riga 2014. In 2014 Riga was chosen a Cultural Capital of Europe. As a part of the program there will be events of international level, and Riga will become a European center for cultural events. These activities will be dedicated to the work of the great individuals of the past who had tremendous influence on the development of arts, culture, and education in Latvia. Riga's residents and visitors will have the opportunity to attend a variety of museum exhibitions, film events, concerts of classical and pop music, opera shows, contemporary performances, concerts of folk groups, etc.
