"Helper, companion, friend"
Curator: Lesia Tolstova
From December 19, 2020, the National Art Museum of Ukraine will host the exhibition project "Assistant, companion, friend" presented by paintings of the 19th - early 20th centuries from the museum's collection, which depicts animals.
It is worth noting, that despite the rich fauna of Ukraine, the animalistic genre in its pure form in the Ukrainian painting of the XIX century was underdeveloped. Consistently worked in it a few artists - battle painter Mykola Samokysh, who preferred the imageы of horses, landscape painter Serhii Svitoslavsky, whose landscapes contained images of most domestic animals of Ukraine and Central Asia, and finally a peculiar master and eccentric man who lived in Kyiv in the 1880s and called himself "Raphael of Cats" - Valerian Yablochkin. Painters who used images of fauna usually introduced them as part of compositions on domestic or historical themes.
The works presented at the exhibition "Assistant, companion, friend" truthfully convey the attitude to animals in the XIX - early XX centuries, reveal the then relationship between man and animal. The exhibition project will cover art and ethical issues, thanks to popular and little-known works from the NAMU collection, viewers will be able to focus on various aspects of the relationship between man and animal, and reflect on how these relationships have changed over time.
The exposition, which will take place both in the halls of the museum and on the virtual platform, will feature works by Oleksandr Murashko, Vsevolod Maksymovych, Kyriak Kostandi, Mykola Samokysh, Valerian Yablochkin, Serhiy Svitoslavsky, Volodymyr Orlovsky, Serhiy Vasylkivsky and others.
The partner of the exhibition is Kyiv Zoo.
The exhibition will last until February 7, 2021.
