Oleh Sokolov: Colour, Music, Word
Opening: 17.04.2021 (Saturday) at 11:00
Curator: Hanna Akieva, Tetiana Osadcha
From April 17 to May 30, 2021, the National Art Museum of Ukraine will host an exhibition project by Oleg Sokolov: color, music, word. Oleg Sokolov's monographic exhibition (1919-1990) was prepared within the framework of the Klitina museum program in partnership with the Odessa Museum of Contemporary Art and is designed to focus on the peculiarities of the artist's worldview and original practice.
The art of Odessa artist Oleg Sokolov will be presented for the first time in the National Art Museum of Ukraine - it is about eighty works of the artist, covering the period from the early 1950s to the late 1980s. Sokolov's innovative artistic practice of the 1950s and 1960s largely became the prototype of the method of Odessa conceptualism, and his interest in the field of light music puts him on a par with the artists who developed the theory of light and sound transmission during the twentieth century.
Interest in the synthesis of color, music and words determines the coordinates of Oleg Sokolov's creative search. The artist has experimented with various art forms, his legacy includes more than a few thousand works - it's drawings, collages, monotypes, calligraphy, art books, cartoons, illustrations, posters and more. Sokolov was somewhat aloof from the general artistic process and could not fully realize all the ideas in Soviet conditions, instead focusing on his museum activities and the fixation of ideas in artistic and poetic works.
Oleg Sokolov worked for many years as a researcher at the Odessa Museum of Western and Oriental Art. Good knowledge in both directions of the collection - Western European and Eastern, also determined his interest in the synthesis of arts. Sokolov learned to understand art, to feel subtly and to combine the peculiarities of different cultural traditions thanks to his teacher, the modernist artist Teofil Freerman, who headed the museum for a long time.
The exposition at NAMU conditionally unites three parts, which are part of the name of the experimental club "Color, Music, Word", founded in Odessa by Oleg Sokolov himself. In addition to the artist's works, the exhibition will feature archival materials that will reveal the artist's creative process.
The exhibition project includes works from the collections of the National Art Museum of Ukraine, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Odessa, the Odessa Museum of Western and Oriental Art, the Odessa Art Museum, private collections of Tatiana and Vladimir Osadchykh (Odessa), Yevhen Demenko (Odessa - Prague).
