Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA) presents

BAUHAUS: FOTOGRAFIE

A joint-project of the National Art Museum of Ukraine and Germany Cultural Center “Goethe Institute in Ukraine” presents leading photographers of the legendary  BAUHAUS.
BAUHAUS is a High School of Architecture, Building, Design and Applied Art, it was founded in 1919 in Weimar. In 1919–1933 Bauhaus became a center of avant-garde art not only in German, but in Europe as well. Ideas risen within the walls of this school significantly influenced the development of esthetics of whole ХХ century.
The exhibition was prepared by the famous curator, Wulf Herzogenrat. It includes 124 original photographs of forty authors. Five series representing esthetics, art style and techniques of Bauhaus artists were shown in the exposition “From the Photogram to Peterhans”, “Portraits”, “Material Objects/World”, “Numeric exposition, cutting, collage, photoplastics" and "Photography in polygraphy". Famous masters are among the authors: Josef Alberts, Laslo Mohoj-Nad, Walter Peterhans and others.
From the Photogram to Peterhans: Mohoj-Nad and Peterhans are two the most famous artists of the Bauhaus. Laslo Mohoj-Nad agreed on any experiment, developed new materials, went for new ideas and passed them on. Creativity of Walter Peterhans, the head of Bauhaus Photography Department, is extremely integral with the dominant still-life theme; he combined the high and material perception with the fine appreciation of composition.
Portraits: Photo portraits of photo artists Gertrude Arndt, Marianne Brandt, Irene Hoffmann, Florence Henri and others were included into this series. Here you can see “portraits” of buildings: severe photos of Bauhaus school taken by Lucia Mohoj, postcard series with buildings as per design of Bauhaus architects and designers. Series is complemented with works of Lux Feininger showing pantomimes of Schlemmer “black and white theatre”, and photographs of Erich Konsemuller presenting several phases of dancer Erich Sindhoff’s moves, etc.
Material Objects / World: Both parts show approaches typical for that time. Opening of a new ways of seeing occurs: photos are taken from shorter distance, from above, diagonally. Publications with picture photographs are issued. Within these searches of new expression ways people are photographed from earshot. Photo works of Mohoj-Nad from “Painting, photography, cinema” book , pictures taken in the night lighting by Hilde Hubbuch, social theme nonfictional photos by Hinnerk Scheper and Hanness Meyer are included into this series.
Numeric exposition, cutting, collage, photoplastics: Photocombination area was a fruitful field for experimentalists. Some representatives of Bauhaus (Mohoj-Nad , Beier, Greff, Kallai and others) endenizened new terms, provided explanations for them, started to split combination types and tried to create works under the strict correspondence to these definitions.
Photography in polygraphy: Using photographs in polygraphy is dated with the beginning of 1927, when Bauhaus started its activities in Dessau. Differently colored geometric figures had been used for decoration and emphasizing of book covers, posters or other “advertisement” before this practice. But photos became available not only for printing things decoration. Bauhaus were the ones to present sketches of a big boards and broadside advertisement.
