From 1930 to 1936 Picasso worked at a big series of engravings, applying different graphic techniques. That was a long project, which in a year appeared in the hands of Vollard.  This collection – 97 engravings and 3 portraits of the dealer – was later entitled “Suite Vollard “.

The primary motifs of the series are the myth of Minotaur (the artist tended to identify himself with this character) – 15 engravings – and the myth of Pygmalion (the author obsessed with his model) – 46 engravings. Among the other motifs are “Rembrandt” and “The Fight of Love.”

During his fertile career, Picasso tried almost all engraving techniques. In the “Suite Vollard” most of the works (almost 75%) are etchings. Tempted by its swiftness and  the speed of execution, he also worked in dry-point, more delicate than etching. 

Last additions to “Suite Vollard “ Picasso engraved in Paris in 1939, not long before the death of the merchant who gave the Suite his name.
