IN THE LANGUAGE OF PAINTING

December 20, 2008 – January 25, 2009

In the framework of the “Live Art” project, twice a year the museum organizes a festive event for children. At the beginning of the summer it is the interactive game “Let’s Play in the Museum” and on St.Nikolas Day it is the opening of a special exhibit.  

This year we decided to start a “multiserial” project, whose aim is to learn the alphabet of fine art.  The first part of the project is the current exhibition of abstract painting. Its basis are the works of contemporary Ukrainian classics of abstractionism: Karlo Zvirynskyi, Oleksandr Pavlov, Oleksandr Ahafonov, Tyberiy Silvashi, Oleksandr Zhyvorkov, Anatoliy Kryvolap, and Mykola Kryvenko.

The idea of the project is to concentrate on basic elements of artistic language; with the help of additional means, to illustrate how color, light and space differ in life and in painting; to  learn how sensations of color and form can be different for each of us.  Children will look for answers to their questions together with us through a game, an experiment, through creative efforts. A computer presentation of the works by the classics of world abstractionism, a short vocabulary of art historical terms and other useful things that children will be able to find in the “reading corner” of the exhibit will help them better understand the exhibit.

Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen

A work of art is a genuine utterance of the artist. Looking at it, we participate in his dialogue with the world. The painter’s “words” are differently colored dabs of paint, lines, light and dark spaces; a well-constructed composition, color harmony and rhythm turn this utterance into poetry. Those who are attentive and sensitive can understand the language of painting and its means of artistic expression.

It is no coincidence that this exhibition shows the works of abstract art, which is, perhaps, most difficult for understanding: in it, all working means are naked, unobscured by figurativeness and subject. Such instruments of art as color, light, space and dynamics are self-sufficient in abstract painting. Thanks to them, abstract art can indirectly deliver a message, which is difficult to verbalize; it embodies something invisible in the images.  

A lot has been said and written on painting. However, as the well-known Norwegian composer Edward Grieg once said, art is a mystery, and we can only verge the understanding of it.

We invite you to think about painting, its power, its ability to touch the most sensitive strings of our soul. Perhaps, those thoughts will help us understand that in painting, we admire that, which in real life often looks too familiar and unnoticeable. When was it last time that you were surprised by the thought that light exists? And not only exists, but sometimes turns into movable light spots! When was it last time that you asked yourself why everything in the world seems to be colored differently? And the world is still called the “white world”?

Every painting expresses great admiration for life in the language of art!
