Jacques Hnizdovsky

Exhibition on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Ukrainian-American artist

Curator: Danylo Nikitin

May, 29th  - July, 5th

Jacques Hnizdovsky (1915 - 1985) is one of the most talented graphic artist in the world. He became very famous in the United States, but in Ukraine until recently he has been known only among small community of experts and appreciators. This is partly explained by the fact that Hnizdovsky left the country before his talent was fully revealed, and partly by the fact that mentioning of emigrant artists was unacceptable in Soviet Union. Although Hnizdovsky developed as an artist in Warsaw and Zagreb academies of art and came to fame in America, he always emphasized his Ukrainian origin.

Hnizdovsky worked with a complicated technique of woodcut and actually he revived this old graphic techniques, inspired by the art of Albrecht Durer. Artist's style was marked by various influences: archetypical motives of Podillia, Japanese and European engraving, American pop-art. But at last Hnizdovsky formed his own particular interpretation of surrounding world - with inflection of tender philosophic irony.

There are Jacques Hnizdovsky's works in many world collections: National Museum of American Art, Addison Gallery, Museum of Fine Art Boston, Museum of Modern Art in Bilbao, Winnipeg Art Gallery, collection of the White House, many universities and private collections.

The exhibition features works from the following collections: National Art Museum of Ukraine, National Museum of Andrii Sheptytskyi, Borshchiv Regional Museum of Local History, Research Library of National University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy" - Omelian Prytsak's collection, Ukrainian Catholic University, US Embassy in Ukraine; from private collections of Pavlo Hudimov, Igor Hryniv, Yaryna Ferentsevych, Roman Ferentsevych, Lida and Peter Matiyashekiv, Catherine and Viktor Yushchenko, Martha Pereima.
