Mikolajus Ciurlionis and His Contemporaries

November 21, 2008-  February 1, 2009

November 21, 2008 (Friday) at 2 p.m. – press-conference dedicated to the festive opening of the exhibition

IN 100 YEARS MIKOLAJUS CIURLIONIS  RETURNS TO KYIV

On November 2008 at 7 p.m. the exhibit of paintings and graphic works by the composer and artist Mikalous Konstantinas Ciurlionis (1875-1911) opens at the National Art Museum of Ukraine.  The exhibition takes place under the patronage of the President of Lithuanian Republic Valdas Adamkus, who will participate in its opening.

The works of the most prominent Lithuanian artists will be shown in Kyiv almost 100 years after the first exhibition of Ciurlionis’s works, which happened in 1910.

For more than 100 years, Mikolajus Ciurlionis’s works have been inspiring art experts and regular viewers from the whole world. His exhibits had great success in the galleries of Paris, Tokyo, Berlin, London, Moscow, and Warsaw. However, today they rarely leave the borders of Lithuania: restorers do not recommend transporting them because of their fragility.

Beside the works by Ciurlionis, the exhibit will present unique painterly and graphic works by the artists of his time – Adomas Varnas, Petras Kalpokas, Jonas Sileika, Kaetonas Sclerus, Justinas Vienozinskis, Mstislav Dobuzhinskis, Antanas Zmuidzinavicius.
