HEROES. AN INVENTORY IN PROGRESS

December 17, 2014 - May 17, 2015

Curators: Michael Fehr (Berlin), curatorial group of the NAMU

Opening: December 17 (Wednesday), 6 pm

Our heroes are alive. Thanks to them, heroism from books came to life and the society revived. We know faces, sometimes remember handshaking. They are in our everyday life. And someone can't be let go forever so soon. Our heroes can be inventoried.

We in the National Art Museum of Ukraine are convinced that now the dialogue about heroes and heroic is actual at its most. That is why in the project Heroes. An Attempt of an  Inventory the critical view on the "heroic heritage", sometimes shocking, that is stored in the funds of the Museum, is important.

For the first time in many years the permanent exhibition of the Museum's first floor will change radically. The idea of renewal appeared in the beginning of 2013 as a need to present and interpret the Museum's collection in accordance with Ukrainian contemporaneity. This idea was supported by Goethe-Institut in Ukraine, an old friend of the Museum. Doctor Michael Fehr, an expert in museology in Germany, was invited. But while the work in the Museum's storage was in progress, the Revolution began in Ukraine. The context and the society have changed. This gave a current topic that can be researched through art collection. New task appeared: to look at the heroic pantheon of Ukraine objectively as at the prehistory and cause of all that is happening with the country today, at to do it together with the public.

The project Heroes. An Inventory in Progress explores the image of a "hero" and the process of its creation. During the inventory of the Museum's storages artworks connected with toposes of a "hero", a "saint", a "martyr", and a "feat" are picked. Among them are images of heroes, real, mythical, and constructed. 180 paintings, sculptures, and graphic art works will be placed on the first floor of the Museum. One of the halls will remain empty for dialogues and discussions about the heroes that Ukraine needs today.

The exhibition develops in coordination with Goethe-Institut in Ukraine as part of the project Time Machine Museum.
