For the very first time in many years the artworks of the Sixties will be exhibited together in the National Art Museum of Ukraine. These works will be presented as an integral artistic phenomenon, despite the fact that these artists worked in quite distinct, barely interconnected contexts, and their works weren't exposed in the same exhibitions during artists' lives. The exhibition "Art of the Ukrainian Sixties. Possibility of the museum" consists of the works of 23 authors from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Lviv and Uzhhorod and once again opens a public discussion on the need for the Museum of Modern Art.
Soviet unofficial art as a forerunner of independent Ukraine's art is still not properly included in the historical and cultural narratives. The Ukrainian 1960s have been rather closely studied by researchers from the different humanitarian spheres. Nevertheless, there is still neither distinct museum nor permanent exhibitions, which could unite unofficial artists from the different regions of Ukraine.
Although there are some preconditions for such presentations: for example, National Art Museum of Ukraine keeps several works of Havrylenko , Lamah, Dubovyk as well as many graphic artists and sculptors; paintings of Karlo Zvirynskyi, Roman and Magrit Selskyis are represented in the two leading museums of Lviv; we can find works of Elizabeth Kremnytska, Ferenz Seman and Paul Bedzir in the Zakarpattia Regional Art Museum; The Museum of Odesa Modern Arthas gathered quite a big collection of representative works of the local artists from unofficial circles.
Despite the isolation, which has defined the creative work of the 1960s, today it is not very difficult to detect the thematic, formal and ideological commonality of various artistic practices. To demonstrate this community, the curators will show together about 100 artistic works of the late 1950s - early 1970s, gathered around multiple semantic lines. Together they form a potential exposure of this period in the future Museum of Modern Art, temporarily located in the exhibition halls of the National Art Museum.
Exhibition was preceded with the publication of the book "Ukrainian Art of the Sixties," which was published by Osnovy Publishing in 2015. Publication was supported by Stedley Art Foundation. More than 70 experts - art critics, scholars, collectors, artists, their relatives and friends - were involved in organizing the materials of the book. The book contains texts about artists, analysis of the trends of the period of 1960s and its historical background, as well as reproductions of more than 300 works, many of which were published for the first time.
Approximately 100 paintings and graphic works from museums and private collections, as well as a selection of archival materials will be featured in the exhibition "The Art of Ukrainian Sixties". Several educational events are planned within the frame of public program of the exhibition. Lectures, film screenings and concerts will bring the visitors nearer to the culture of that era and will help to see it wider and bigger. This public program was developed in the partnership with the NGO "Cultural Project", Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Centre and "Ukho" ("Ear") agency.
The organizers and curators of the exhibition would like to express their thanks for the provided works to: Nikanor Onatskyi Regional Art Museum in Sumy, The Museum of Odesa Modern Art, Yosyp Bokshai Zakarpattia Regional Art Museum, BorysVoznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery, Kyiv Museum of the Sixties, National Art Museum of Ukraine; collectors: Stella Benyaminova, Oleksii Vasilenko, Ihor Voronov, Tetiana and Borys Hryniovs, Eduard Dymshits, Anatolii Dymchuk, Mykhailo Duran, Pavlo Kovach.
