07.05.2019 Lecture: Kyiv collectors Khanenko
The histories of art collectors are no less exciting than adventure novels. However, they are full of white spots and mysteries. From the family archive of Khanenko almost no documents left, because Varvara Khannenko was commanded to burn most of the papers.
The memoirs of her husband Bohdan Khanenko, published in 2009, help to reconstruct their life history and the history of the formation of the collection. He recalled that during a casual conversation with a Moscow horse breeder M. Malyutin it became clear that he, having recently become the owner of a house with many old paintings, threw them as unwashed in the attic. Bogdan Khannenko immediately inspected that "useless" and decided to buy everything. That same night, he carried about 100 paintings, among them such masterpices as the Surbaran's still life "Dishes and Blocks for Chocolate," Rembrandt's "Old Oriental Dance", Ruben's "Lazarus Resurrection", "Dancing Nymphs" by Crespi, works of Italian, Dutch, Flemish school of painting.
These pictures can now be seen at the Museum of the Khanenko, and on the Saturday, Nadiya Pavlichenko, a NAMU employee, a senior lecturer at the NaUKMA's Department of Cultural Studies, will tell about the wonderful story of the collection's creation.
