03.12.2019 Lecture: From Classicism to Romanticism
At the late 18th - early 19th century artistic trends and phenomena coexisted in close interaction and mutual influences. When the cold and rational classicism gravitated towards the endless baroque ornamental, it was at the same time intertwined with sensual sentimentality, and exalted romanticism existed alongside ever-greater realism.
For example, Apollon Mokrytskyi combined the ideas of late romanticism with academicism in "Portrait of a Wife": a balanced and symmetrical composition, a certain dryness of the letter still testify to academic training, but removing his model from the world of mundane vanity and placing it among fragile blooms beneath fragile flowers sentimental-lyrical coloration of the image.
To understand all the artistic vicissitudes of this period, come to the lecture "From Classicism to Romanticism" by Maria Kabak, Senior Fellow of the Art Department of the late 19th - early 20th centuries.
