12.10.2020 Lecture: Ukrainian Baroque art: iconography
Baroque style - monumental, sublime and solemn, dynamic, magnificently decorative, dramatic, sensual… From the end of the 16th to the end of the 18th century baroque flooded all of Europe and affected all fields of cultural life.
Artistic excesses and borrowings of this style were naturally perceived by Ukrainians of different strata and levels of education, became a conscious ideal of beauty and fully invested in the understanding of the philosophy of the sacred, and in the care of "creatures". The Ukrainian icon of the Baroque era is a truly original phenomenon, unique in its artistic expression. The icon acquires a secular interpretation, the appeal to reality changes its artistic structure, transforms its picturesque language.
Natalia Tashlay, a senior researcher at the Department of Medieval Art at NAMU, will talk about the Ukrainian icon of the Baroque era, trends in iconography, preserved and destroyed monuments in the lecture "Ukrainian Baroque art: iconography".
