Online lecture: Graphics and book illustration of the 19th - early 20th century
The art of graphics of the 19th century enters a fundamentally new stage of its development. Weakening of church influences, democratization of public life led to its rapid flourishing. At the beginning of the 19th century, the works of artists were filled with love for Ukraine, awareness of it as a separate country with its own roots, language, culture and history. Writers, ethnographers, historians, and artists substantiated the very idea of the existence of a separate Ukrainian ethnos. Thanks to mobility and a wide arsenal of techniques, graphic art played an extraordinary role in this cultural movement: publishing and illustrating books, periodicals, albums, art trips, in which artists captured both urban landscapes of newly built cities and turned to Ukrainian antiquity, churches, castles, creation of highly artistic easel works: portraits, landscapes, household and historical works.
