02.02.2021 Online lecture "Mark Epstein and the Kultur-Liga: the place of Jewish culture in the Avant-garde"

This Saturday (6.02) at 12:00 we invite you to join the online lecture "Mark Epstein and the Kultur-Liga: the place of Jewish culture in the Avant-garde", dedicated to the phenomenon of Kultur-Liga and its organizer Mark Epstein.

Kultur-Liga is a Jewish cultural and educational organization formed during the Ukrainian Central Rada on January 15, 1918, in Kyiv for the comprehensive development of the culture of the Jewish people in Yiddish. Its activities covered various sections: educational, publishing, library, music, theater, art, Jewish statistics and archives. One of the most powerful sections of the Cultures-League was art.

It will be discussed at lectures, the creative achievements of its members, including Mark Epstein, Boris Aronson, Issachar-Ber Rybak, Joseph Tchaikov and other artists, in the field of art of book graphics, sculpture and scenography. Find out what the artists relied on in their search and whether they managed to create a recognizable Jewish style in art.

The funds of the National Art Museum of Ukraine contain many graphic and pictorial works by Mark Epstein - sculptor, graphic artist, theater artist, painter, director of the Jewish School of Art and Industry (1923-1931). His creative evolution will be the subject of detailed discussion in lectures.
