Painting on Textiles
Curator: Oksana Melnychuk (PromCom Association)
Mireille Barreault has the diploma of Paris Higher School of Applied Art. Because of her diplomatic mission, for more than forty years she has lived abroad. Out of those, she spent twenty years in Russia, Georgia and Ukraine.
Almost in each country she visited, Mireille Barreault showed her work at exhibitions and master-classes. Each country becomes her source of inspiration – English parks, Portuguese „azulejo” tiles, mosaics of Tunisia, Georgian enamels, Chinese porcelain, Ukrainian Easter eggs…
While in Lissabon, Portugal, the directorate of the Opera theatre in San-Carlos ordered the artist to execute paintings on silk in order to design costumes to Nizhynskiy’s ballet “The Sacred Spring” – after the drawings of the Russian artist Konstantin Roerich.
The technique of painting on silk (crepe de China, which is translated from French as Chinese crepe), which Mireille Barreault practices, requires most precise drawing skills. First a drawing is created on paper, then the motif is transferred onto the stretched textile. Silk must be stretched to the maximum on the frame. The hand should be confident and slow in motion so that lines be distinct. The lines should be applied as a layer thick enough in order not to let the color “out.” The artist works in watercolor, applying all kinds of scales. She knows that every mistake may become fatal.
