Behind the image of sophisticated artist Roman Selskyi (1903-1990) hides the person extremely energetic and persuasive. Powerful draftsman and colorist, Selskyi had the gift of thinking, talking, teaching and inspiring. Thanks to him the Lviv Art School was one of the most potent among the schools of the USSR. Selskyi supported the favored emergence of the portal to Europe.
He was an adept of Parisian modernism who loved the Carpathian mysticism. The influence of Oleksa Novakivskyi, Mykhailo Boichuk, Fernand Léger, and Giorgio de Chirico can be seen in the art of Roman Selskyi. Thanks to the influence of European art of the beginning of the 20th century the realistic art of Selskyi acquired metaphysical dimension which has given to things another life, mystic and stealthy.
But perhaps the most important thing is the fact that noble and modest Roman Selskyi was the key figure of Galician cultural milieu and of Lviv Art School. His house, which was called The Selskyi Salon, was the center of communication of Lviv intelligentsia from the 1950-s to 1990-s. He created the free atmosphere which preserved the aristocratic and intellectual tradition and transferred it through the decades.
