Curator:

From November 29, the first part of the permanent exhibition of the 2nd floor of the National Art Museum of Ukraine “Modernism in Ukraine” opens. At the same time, it is a presentation of the results of the first stage of cooperation between NAMU and one of the most innovative banks in the world, PrivatBank, which the two institutions have launched since 2019. The Museum's patronage agreement provides for 2 million hryvnias for the opening of "light lanterns" in the ceiling of the museum, so that in the first half of 2019, the ceilings were opened in the three exposition halls of the 2nd floor of NAMU and the light windows provided by the original architectural plan were opened. Work is now underway to open the "light lanterns" in the three showrooms of the 2nd floor.

"Modernism in Ukraine" (a joint project with the Central State Cinematophone Archive of Ukraine named after GS Pshenychny) is an attempt to review the established view of Ukrainian art of the first third of the twentieth century, to put it in the world context of the time and at the same time to reveal the specifics of the Ukrainian situation. During this time, many innovative movements and trends existed in the arts, which existed in parallel, sometimes competing, sometimes complementing one another, and a mass culture began to take shape. Constant updating of the plastic language, active interpretation of art forms, appeals to the subconscious are the defining features of the cultural and artistic era of the late 19th - first half of the 20th century, which we call modernism today.

Many works are exhibited for the first time in the permanent exposition of the museum during the years of independence: murals of Boyuchists Oksana Pavlenko, Mykola Rokytsky and Leo Kramarenko, preparatory drawing on the leukas of Mykhaylo Boychuk "Apple" (1913), works by Alexander Petrovochny, works by Alexander Petrovo, , The Wave by Alexander Bogomazov and his recently restored The Pilars, The Collection of Tomatoes by Ivan Padalka, the works of the French period by Oleksa Gryshchenko. For the first time the sculpture of Alexander Arkhipenko "The Female Image" (1925), donated to the museum 5 years ago, will be on display.
